I dislike being lazy. It's not a very nice feeling. But that's what I get when I speed too fast, and I finish everything faster than I should have. So does this mean that I will get to sleep longer tomorrow? No, it does not, because I will still get up, and go to he library and do more work, till it is time for the sun to set. But thankfully, I am not alone. At least now, there's a whole bunch of us to crack our heads, and when things get beyond our collective heads, go and look for the lecturer.

I just love/hate it when we start doing a problem at 2 pm and only finish it at 6pm. But when the lecturer does it, finishes it in 5 minutes.

It was taken in Bristol, UK. This picture was exposed from the 17th of December 2007 to the 21st of June 2008, via a pinhole camera with a piece of photographic paper lined inside it.

Why do the concerts have to be on bloody Wednesdays??

But you know what? I'll go watch Britney instead because she's performing on a Saturday and I don't have to skip astronomy. Then, I'll get to see her shake booty, live. How cool is that?

I Rode A Bull

Listening to these songs, I can't help but let my mind wander to some of the most enjoyable times I ever had. I was speaking to Kennard the other day, and he was talking to me about the orientation night at INTI and how it was a complete blast. There was rain, great bands, good sound systems, and mosh pits. But what caught his attention the most was how similar it was to last year. He kept telling me about how he was reminded of our band, The Rodeo Riders, and how he missed the good times we had practicing, and just living together as a band. In many ways, I could relate to what he was saying because I felt the same way. And in many ways, I feel like reliving those moments one more time, just for the fun of it, because those were among some of the best times in my entire life. Days where I felt like I was a part of something. Days where I could look into the eyes of another person and know that I could count on his or her words. Days where I could sit at a table and know that no one tried to put cyanide in my food. Sure, there were some difficult times then. There were those that got on my nerves and whose tongues were never the intentions of their minds. But overall, I took it all with a pinch of salt, and always had my head pointed forwards because I knew that I had something to look forward to. Something to dream and hope about.

It's hard not to think this way, when lately life alone has been like fighting a battalion with a squad. Don't get me wrong. I am having a great time here, meeting new challenges everyday, and trying to get the best out of whatever I have. But sometimes I feel like I am staring down a loaded barrel that is staring right back at me, and could or could not blow up at any moment. Unpredictable

I know that plenty of good things are coming my way. I am sure of that. I have some really great friends here. But, I just need the ground to stop shaking as much as it is, at least for a while.

Hi Senthil,

What's your field of view? Are the three stars the belt of Orion?
What is your exposure time?

You may be overexposing the camera on the brightest stars and what you
are seeing are saturation effects around the brighest stars. There
is also a lot of dark current (thermal noise) in your image because your
camera is not cooled (although tonight to pretty cool!).

I'd say the "flares" are just copies of the three stars when the
camera was bumped or in motion when you open/close the shutter. One
set of "flares" is the beginning of the exposure, the other at the
end. The spacing of the "flares" is the same as the three stars.
These stars are so much brighter than any other nearby stars and
you see the affects of the camera's motion. There aren't enough
photos from the other stars to see motion that occurs during a small
fraction of the total exposure time.

I Got A New Laptop!

Or at least that's what I would love to have been able to say. I've been having some trouble with my internet connection lately. It is often slow and unsteady. It was so bad that it sometimes took pages ages to load, and on some occasions, pages just wouldn't load. And even when talking over msn, the line would go bad and I wouldn't be able to hear what the other person is saying and sometimes my messages would not get delivered, thus making chatting a nightmare. Initially, I suspected that it could be my laptop since my roommate who is using a Studio 15 doesn't have as much interruption as I do. He gets it, but not as much as me. So my mom recommended that I get a new laptop to avoid all the hassle. I said ok, and I went to shop around for some great bargains. I saw a few good bargains, and the one which caught my attention was a HP laptop which is really good and reasonably cheap. I could put the specs here, but, I'm just too lazy to go and look for it. However, I wasn't really to keen in buying it because I knew that for every dollar I spent here, my parents would have to fork out 3.6 times that amount and 3.6 ringgits multiplied by the 791 dollars is a lot of money. If I could still use this laptop which I am currently on, and not have to spend a single cent, then I'd be happy. So to confirm that, I got my laptop checked by the internet guys at my university. I told them about my problem and they went about diagnosing it. When I got it back this afternoon, the conclusion was simple. The wireless network in my university is hopelessly slow and moody. The technician said that my existing network card was more than sufficient for good internet speed, and that there is nothing wrong with it. This means that I don't have to get a new laptop, and I don't have to spend that 791 dollars for that uber cool HP. But with that said, my current laptop has its own moods. It turns off whenever it feels like it and sometimes its keyboard would refuse to work. But these problems only occur occasionally. Perhaps once or twice a week? So, what should I do?

But moving on, I had a great photography day today. I nearly froze my fingers off, taking pictures of Orion and its stars. The temperature was around 32 Fahrenheits, or about 0 degrees Celsius. Call me mad, but I spent 40 minutes in that weather, just to take advantage of the clear skies. My hands were numb by time I was finished and I had to run to the gent's and soak them in hot water for a few minutes. But it was definitely worth it. My only regret was that I couldn't get a good shot of Orion's Nebula. Well, there's always tomorrow, I hope.

This is Betelgeuse. It's a fairly old red supergiant that is nearing the end of its life.


On the other hand, we have Rigal, or the knee of the Hunter. This is a very rare young, blue supergiant.


And finally, we have Sirius. This is not part of Orion, but this is the brightest star in the night sky, and the third brightest object in the night sky, after the Moon and Venus.

Looking at these stars is like peering through a time machine that takes us back millions of years, and in some cases hundreds of millions of years ago (The light from the stars that we see now happened a very long time ago so if a star were to explode now, we'd only be able to see it millions of years from now.) And to realize that each of those dots are many, many times bigger, brighter and hotter than our own magnificent sun, I just can't stop being amazed.

Feel Like 14

Since I got here, I've had some rather frequent music swings. I've had urges to listen to all sorts of music. All the way from blues, to heavy metal, and most notably over the past few weeks, classic rock. And recently, as in about two days ago, I've had this suuden urge to want to listen to modern pop-punk and pop goth bands like Paramore, Fireflight and whatever it is that fits that particular genre. I don't know why but, I find their lyrics and their heavy yet melodic guitar playing to be extremely uplifting, and sometimes working like some sort of hallucinogen that I can just lose myself in, and let my mind run wild. And it's during times like these that I feel like picking a guitar up and visualizing myself on a stage rocking out to a bunch of compliant and mosh pit thirsty audience.

Damn, I feel like I'm 14 all over again.

Another day, and I've so many things that I want to speak about. But the problem is, I'm extremely lazy to type out anything.

But one thing that I have to say that the passengers on this flight are incredibly lucky, and the pilots of this aircraft deserve the highest possible flying medal.





According to Physics, this plane should have broken up, and killed a good portion of its passengers. But instead, it didn't and all 155 people survived.

I Saw Andromeda

I had a great astronomy lecture today, and I finally saw my first galaxy. We peeked into the heavens and we saw Andromeda, which is about 2.5 million light years away from our solar system. That is the closest galaxy to the Milky way, and according to my book, we might be on a collision course with Andromeda! Apart from Andromeda, we looked at Venus, Uranus, Orion's Nebula and a host of other stars. Plus we also had an activity where we had to manually identify the stars in the night sky based on a star chart. We managed to identify Sirius which is the brightest star in the sky, Beteljeuce which is the shoulder of Orion or "The Hunter" as some would call Orion, and a lot of other cool stars. What amazed me the most was how Dr. Aufdenberg could just look into the sky and name the stars by heart. Oh, and the next time someone says that they can see the Milky Way from earth, they are not lying. They are telling the truth because the solar system is positioned in such a way that we're actually facing the center "the big bulge" in the middle of the Milky Way. But to see that, you have to be in a very dark area. For example, a county side. So that was astronomy for today.

But apart from Astronomy, I had quite a few laughs today. First of all, reading about how some groups back in Malaysia have called for the boycott of American products. Not only that, Mahathir has called out to Malaysians to stop using the American dollar, and for all those working with American corporations such as McDonald's and Microsoft to immediately quit their jobs. Apparently, it should be done because America is supporting Israel's incursion into Gaza. I've got two issues with that. Number one, our economy isn't doing very well and asking people to quit their jobs and to reduce trade and the circulation of money is only going to worsen the problem. And when that happens, people loose their jobs. When people loose their jobs, they loose money and a source of income to pay their mortgages, bills, to feed their families, and disposable income to drive the economy. When that happens, the crime rate will go up because people have to survive, and when circumstances are dire, humans would do just about anything. So, in the end, we end up losing big time.

Secondly, are these groups seriously trying to tell us that it was Israel's fault that this whole thing started? Let me ask you. Who launched rockets into Israel despite repeated calls for them to stop? Hamas. Who hid their weapons and military targets in the middle of civilian population centers? Hamas. Who sent suicide bombers to Israel? Hamas. Who instigated the fight? Hamas. And they have the cheek to blame Israel. Goodness. True, I don't agree with how Israel has responded with such force that has caused the deaths of nearly 800 civilians. But if you asked me, Hamas asked for it. And they are just as equally to be blamed for all the atrocities in Palestine.

But the most funniest news I read today, was how two Muslims got caned for drinking beer. According to the authorities, the caning was not intended to inflict pain on them, but instead, to bring shame upon them. With all due respect for their laws. Can't they be shamed in less painful ways? Must you go and hurt them, humiliate them and do all sorts of things to them and expect them to learn from it and respect you for it? Oppression breeds rebellion. Think about it.

Pull My Hair Out

I had a rather uneventful day today, except in the evening where I watched this really cool video that scared me and amazed me all at the same time. It's called the "Power of 10'S". I tried to search for the video online, but I couldn't find it. Plus, the internet service here is really getting on my nerves. To put a scale to it, even on its best days, it is just as worse as streamyx is on its bad days. First world country, with with first world services...yeah right. I know of community and state colleges with half the tuition fee and half the funding that get better service than this.

Never Say Never

I learnt a very good lesson today. Never, ever say that there are nothing to photograph, because, if I did say that, I would have missed this.

But the bomb definitely had to be the fighter jets taking off. It was an amazingly, spectacular sight. The sound was intense, and the flame coming out their afterburners made for one heck of a beautiful sight.

Two Reasons

Two reasons why I am a genius.

1. I forgot that my handphone was in pocket, and I proceeded to put that pants into the washing machine for 34 minutes, and for another 40 minutes in the drier. Don's ask me about the phone though.

2. I relearned how to use a chopstick. You should have seen the look on my face when I fumbled with a chopstick. It wasn't very pretty.

Our Place In The Universe

What is our place in the Universe?

I was reading my Astronomy textbook not too long ago, and in it they summarized that our place in the universe is this: We live in a planet orbiting an average star among more that 100 billion stars in the Milky Way Galaxy, which in turn of one of billions of galaxies in the universe.

To put that into perspective, here's a little summary. The closest star to our solar system, Alpha Centauri, is about 4.4 light years away, or 41.624 trillion kilometers away. One light year is 9.46 trillion kilometers. Let's just say that the sun is the size of a grapefruit, and the star is a point in a direction away from the sun. To get to that point, we would have to walk for 4,400 kilometers. And the radius of our galaxy is 100,000 light years or 946,000 trillion kilometers. In our galaxy, we have about 100 billion stars. In our universe, we have approximately 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars. To put that into perspective, that number represents every single grain of sand on every stretch of beach on Earth. Our universe spans more than 14 billion light years. We place the number at 14 billion light years, because that is as far back in time as we can see. It could be much more than that.

The book also makes an interesting observation about the time line of life on earth, compared to the formation of the universe. Let's put the entire 14 billion years into the space of 12 months. Let's assume that the Universe was created at the stroke of midnight on the 1st of January. Earth was formed in early September. By late September, life on earth was flourishing. Early dinosaurs appeared on the 26th of December. The dinosaurs grew extinct on the 30th of December. And the first humanoids capable of walking upright walked this earth at about 9 PM on the 31st of December. And all of this happened over a space of 14 billion years. The ancient Egyptians built the pyramids at about 11 seconds ago, and you and I were born about 0.05 seconds ago. That is 11.59.59.95 PM on the 31st of December. Amazing huh?

Another observation which the book makes is that, life on earth is the result of chemical reactions from dying stars. In other words, we're the children of the stars. But it doesn't answer the question of life itself. But what if, life really is the product of chemical reactions?

So really. What is our place in the universe?

Permanent Head Damage

Today was great second day of college. I had one class today. I had Solid Mechanics, and it was taught by Dr. Fady Barsoum. I just noticed that for this semester, all my lecturers are Doctors. Astonomy is taught by Dr. Jason Aufdenberg. Dynamics is taught by. Dr. Pedro Echeverria, and Fluids might be taught by either Dr. Axel Rhode, or Dr. Lee Yongho.

I've always had an immense amount of respect for anyone with a Dr. in front of their names. I think that it speaks volumes about their accomplishments in their fields. Personally, I would love to have a Ph.D, but I really don't know if I'm prepared tp put in all those hours in writing my research and thesis. As it is, getting a degree is a whole lot of work, and even the basic concepts of much of what I am doing are really, very difficult.

On the other hand... I think I'm slowly developing my "logical crapping skills"

Hari Kedua

I had a great day today. I set my alarm to go off at 9 am, but I eventually got up at 10.15. I'm still stuck in Phoenix time I guess. The start of the day was slightly hectic, as I had to go and look for books, and do all my other things. The evening was nice. I played hand ball, with some of my mates. Then, in the night, the same mates and I went for some Hookah. It was my first time, and it felt really weird. The place was neat, but only it was empty, and there was a club called "Gentleman's Club" opposite the Hookah store. I wonder what that is. And I've finally seen a Lamborghini Murcielago LP 640. And now I want to sleep.

Back In Daytona

So here I am, back in Florida, where I will spend the next four to five months trying to have as much fun as I can, while doing what I came here to do.

The return trip, was not fun in any sense. First, there was the flying. I dislike flying, unless, I'm the pilot. Second, I got charged 50 dollars because one of my bags was 9 pounds over the limit. I managed to bring it down to 5, but they still charged me 50 dollars, on top of the 17 dollars needed to check my bag in.

I flew back with US Airways. Though they had a great, comfortable plane and a slightly larger legroom, I wasn't too impressed with their service. They had a great crew, but it was their operational capability that got me thinking. First of all, I nearly lost my seat because they had sold more tickets than there were available seats on the aircraft. Second, they charged me 2 dollars for a bottle of water, something which was free aboard the American and Delta flights which I took. It's not that it is a huge sum or that I'm going to go crazy about it, but after paying so much for a ticket, the least they could do was to offer a complementary beverage to the passengers. It may loose them a bit of money, but at the end of the day, one has to look at the marketing side of things. If a customer isn't happy about certain things, they are less than likely to want to use that service again. And when that happens, you loose business, and profits will hurt as a result. At least, that's how I look at it.

But thankfully, I got back, safe and sound, and I'm not ready to start again. I'm some ways I'm not to keen on the semester, but when I think about the possibility of playing with a "large arse" telescope, peering into the heavens and looking at some of the most amazing stars, constellations and planets, I feel motivated.

I want to have a great semester.

You know, kids are the best. We were having lunch today, and my aunt asked my seven year old cousin about the type of girl that he likes. After asking a few questions, this is what happened.

How does one give birth to twins that have birthdays on different year, different month and different time?

Well.. You give birth to one on the 31st of December 2008, at around 11.26 PM and the next one on the 1st of January 2009 at 12.17 AM. That's how. And no, I'm not making this up. It really happened to a couple. I just read about it. It makes me wonder. So can the elder brother whack his little brother just because he was born 21 minutes after him? Or will there be a claim of equality? Hmm... Such deep thoughts. Oh yea? Well, what would you prefer?

Anyways, it looks like 2009 is already off to a great start. I spent the whole morning, productively gaining more, and more knowledge, and my hair is starting to become more obedient. All that's left? Saying a good FU to quite a number of people, and lambast them with a bit of what I would call "savory and constructive criticism and sign language" and then I'll be ready for 2010. Oh, I just can't wait for that part, and I know exactly who to start with. What else could I have meant when I said that I wanted to make more friends and more people happy in 2009?

Eh.. Cannot...2009 must be more positive! But then again...hehehe *influenced by the wild and whacky stories of metal and Formula 1 stars*

You know what? I think I'm gonna grab a beer.

Things To Do

Since Jon did it, I am going to do it to. This is the list of things I hope to do in 2009.

1. Go for at least 2 memorable road trips.
2. Play an electric guitar.
3. Strengthen existing friendships.
4. Make many new friends.
5. Let my hair down more often.
6. Increase my miserable CGPA.
7. Drink a Jager bomb.
8. Get a job.
9. Make money
10. Make more people happy =)
