Overlord

It was to this very date, sixty four years ago that one of the biggest steps in securing the freedom of mankind was taken on the sandy beaches of Normandy.On a grey, stormy morning of the 6th of June 1944, 200,000 Allied soldiers stormed Hitler's Atlantic wall to begin what would go down in history as one of the major turning points of the century. The operation was codenamed "Operation Overlord" or D-Day to most of us. It was the biggest and bloodiest ever amphibious landing ever to be carried out and the most trickiest as well. It was one where almost everything that could go wrong, did go wrong. It was one where if the weather got worse, everything would have been lost. But despite the overwhelming odds, the Allied troops under the command of General Dwight D Eisenhower prevailed and continued to root out the Nazi oppression of Europe and less than a year later, the Liberation of Europe was a success and Hitler dead. And subsequently, the brutual Empire of Japan under Emperor Hirohito was also defeated. And in this war, nearly 55 million people lost their lives. Some of them in the most brutual and inhumane of ways. And therefore, it is imperative that we remember the sacrifices of these men and women so that we do not repeat our past mistakes.
